OktoberFest: A “Stammtisch” of Thousands: Skepticism Over U.S. Travel Advisory In Europe
Article:17 December 2013 - Social Europe Journal. The German language has a word, “Stammtisch,” that really has no English equivalent. The closest translation is something like “a table reserved for regulars” or “regular get-together".

"Munich’s annual rite of beer swilling known as Oktoberfest, is like a massive Stammtisch of hundreds of thousands of people who have a regular annual date in Munich. I had never attended Oktoberfest before but when the organizers of my lecture in Munich invited me to be their guest at Oktoberfest, it was too attractive an offer to turn down."

This is where people of all ages go to soak their limbs in warm healing waters. Bads, bains or baths have been common in Europe for over two thousand years, dating back to Roman times.

Ancient Transportations: Walking and
Bicycling to Health

Blog posted: 28 Oct 2010 - How's Europe Doing: The Washington Monthly. Europeans seem to be literally biking and walking their way to health, and research bears this out. In Germany and the Netherlands, a study found that walking and cycling account for a third of all urban trips. In American cities, they account for less than a tenth. This activity not only provides young and old with valuable physical exercise, it also assures them a level of mobility and independence that greatly enhances their quality of life.
