Stephen Hill Linkography: Expert Advice

Shorting Economists: The 'Experts' Keep Getting it Wrong
Article: August 19, 2010 - Truthdig. Throughout the 1990s and during the 2000s more voodoo economists likened Europe's economy to that of a "sick, sclerotic old man," until it was discovered that Europe had surpassed the U.S., creating more jobs, higher per capita growth and higher productivity. It is important that we find better measuring sticks and employ saner values for assessing what a successful economy looks like. Until then, we are flying in uncharted territory, without radar and surrounded by fog. Heaven help us!!

Austerity vs. Stimulus: Who’s Right?
Article: November 24, 2010 - Social Europe Journal. To paraphrase Denmark’s Prince Hamlet, ‘To enact austerity or not to enact austerity, that is the question.’ Unfortunately, dear Hamlet, that is a question without a sure answer. The truth is, none of the experts know what is the correct thing to do. Trichet, Bernanke, Geithner, Schäuble, Krugman, Stiglitz, Wolf, Münchau, Soros, all of them.

Japan and Germany, Often Dismissed By US Economists, See Sustainable Growth and Less Unemployment
Article Posted: 22 December 2010 – New America Media. Also posted as: Reconsidering Japan, Reconsidering Paul Krugman, 19 November 2010 – Industry News.  Throughout the 1990s, and still today, Krugman has skewered Japan’s economy, its economists and its leaders.
This criticism of Japan raises the important question: What is an economy for? To produce the prosperity, security and services that people need? Or to satisfy the theories and models of economists?

President-Elect Obama's Stimulus Plan Is Only
Half a Loaf

Article: Friday 16 January 2009 – Truthout. In announcing his economic stimulus plan, Obama unveiled some badly needed measures, including rebuilding of roads, bridges and schools and increased renewable energy production. But his American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan misses an opportunity to more directly invest in the greatest "infrastructure" of all - the American people.

Economic Democracy and Codetermination: Harnessing the Capitalist Engine
Book review: Posted 15 January 2010 - the Globalist (daily online magazine on the global economy, politics and culture). In the aftermath of the economic crisis, the United States needs a new economic model — one that will decentralize power and put it in the hands of the workers. European advances in a distinct brand of 'social capitalism' are perhaps the most important innovations in the world economy since the invention of the modern corporation itself.

Stephen Hill Linkography: Health Care Reform

Article: 22 February 2010 at NYTimes.com. By using reconciliation, President Obama will return the Senate to the original vision of the founders. And he will pass health care legislation that will allow millions of fellow Americans to enjoy a level of health care security that the president and the senators themselves already enjoy.

Healthcare Tests the Senate’s Credibility
Article: 30 November 2009 - Financial Times.
America’s healthcare debate has been like a tennis match, bouncing from the Senate to the House of Representatives and back again. Now it is back in the Senate, as the US tries to end its status as the only advanced economy without universal healthcare for its people.

There's No Place Like Europe: Steven Hill on Medical House Calls, Multiparty Politics, and Other American Fantasies
Interview: Monday 18 October 2010 - by Alissa Bohling for Truthout.
During this lengthy interview Hill touched on the kind of support Europeans have that Americans don't have. He gave this example: "An American friend of mine living in Toulouse France got a hornet sting when I was visiting her. She calls up her doctor and, 20 minutes later, there's the French doctor with his little black bag. What does that feel like to a person, to know that you have that kind of access to the support that you need?"

Book Review of Europe’s Promise: Why the European Way is the Best Hope in an Insecure Age
Book review: Posted 31 January 2010 on Folkpolitics by the Liberal Arts Dude. (Provides an excellent overview of Europe's Promise.)The reviewer found Hill's book fascinating and recommended that it deserves to be read widely in the United States. More specifically, he suggested that American public policy makers, politicians, pundits, and those who have power to craft public opinion and policy should read it and take a long hard look at American institutions, economic practices, policy-making, etc. and ask themselves –"Are we doing the best job that we can do and getting the results we intended?"

Europe's Promise by Steven Hill
Book review: Posted 10 April 2010 - Will blog for food by John. An excellent book review! So don’t be put off by the blog’s title or the length of the review. John’s style of writing and knowledge of the subject makes this a fascinating read. He agrees with Hill’s assessment of the current situation and goes on to make a number of thought provoking comparisons between the policies of U.S. and European governments (Norway in particular).

Steven Hill: The Crisis Unites Europe
Interview in Greek: 16 October 2010 – Vima Online, the leading daily newspaper in Greece, by Markos Karasarinis (Greek reference: Στίβεν Χίλ Η κρίση ενώνει την Ευρώπη Μάρκος Καρασαρίνης, 16 Οκτωβρίου 2010 - Το Βήμα Online. Use Google translator). The American writer, journalist and political analyst talks about the opportunities the crisis provides to Europe, and tells why he believes that Greece is on the right track. More specifically Hill states that the current government is moving away from the previous practices of hiding deficits and is combating tax evasion. Certainly the deficits are not only a challenge for Greece but for many other western governments as well as Japan.

Steven Hill: The Insane Prescription of the
IMF is Repeated in Greece

Interview in Greek: 21 October 2010 – Zoom News (Greek reference: Παραφροσύνη η επανάληψη της συνταγής ΔΝΤ στην Ελλάδα , Δημ/ση 21 Οκτ. 2010 – Zoomnews.gr (Use Google translator). The event took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 18 October. The distinguished analyst (Hill)argued against the IMF prescriptions that are already in place in the Greek economy. He considers the American Model of Capitalism, know as Wall Street Capitalism, bankrupt because it brought on the economic chaos that plunged America into recession.
